🎥 CARDIGAN TO CAERNARFON 🚴🏼‍♀️ Thi 🎥 CARDIGAN TO CAERNARFON 🚴🏼‍♀️

This was a week ago! A beautiful stretch which included Snowdonia and the quiet Lŷnn Peninsula (the bit that looks like an arm pointing at Ireland).

I’m glad I’m recording all this as it’s so easy to forget what I’ve seen. I’m getting very used to cycling every day and really liking this way of life. Feels like I’m always in the present moment and never over thinking. I can see why people get addicted to travelling.

Some nice towns and loads of castles between Cardigan and Caernarfon. I liked Caernarfon a lot and even found myself in the local Wetherspoons which overlooked the castle. I needed a decent meal which included a pint of Leffe for under a tenner so it was the obvious thing to do…

🎥 SWANSEA TO CARDIGAN 🚴🏼‍♀️ A coup 🎥 SWANSEA TO CARDIGAN 🚴🏼‍♀️

A couple of friends joined me for these 4 days of cycling in Wales. It was great to have company.

We had very mixed weather and found that rain in Wales is like a shower being turned on and off at random intervals.

Pembrokeshire was particularly beautiful and actually reminded me a lot of Cornwall without all the tourists and massive hills.

We had some great accommodation - a hilltop chalet near Carmarthen with complimentary pizza and Prosecco (thank you @richardhammond6 ). A land pod at St David’s YHA, a sea view YHA at Poppit Sands run by two lovely women who were volunteers and a friend of a friends parents house in Castlemartin (thank you @megrutha & @sezzabird ). The strawberry infused porridge in the morning was lush.

Very much enjoying being in Wales, and it’s nice to hear the language being widely spoken. Unfortunately the only word I know is Araf (Slow!) but I’m sure I’ll get by with my “Ozzie accent” (as people keep assuming!)

🎥 ILFRACOMBE TO SWANSEA 🚴🏼‍♀️ I’ 🎥 ILFRACOMBE TO SWANSEA 🚴🏼‍♀️

I’m a bit behind on these videos as I’ve had guests!

This was last week, a four day run of sunny weather. I got a new wheel in Bristol (thanks Bro!) which was a huge relief.

I also undertook a big ‘pannier detox’ and got rid of all my non-essential items. Managed to shed about 2kg!

I faced my second highest hill (420m) of the entire trip after Lynmouth. It started off very steep but petered out into a gentle climb which I could almost describe as semi-relaxing. The scenery was breathtaking and I now have a new found love for North Somerset, quite an underestimated part of the coastline. After peaking at 420m, I had the option to pay £1 to take the scenic toll road. It was the best pound I’ve ever spent as I had the entire road to myself and spent 20 mins freewheeling downhill into Porlock.

The next few days were the first time I’ve had really long flat stretches. Cycling from the Severn bridge to Cardiff was like Norfolk! It felt like a key milestone entering Wales and I immediately noticed how friendly everyone was.

Thanks to @carole3858 and Gareth for putting me up in Cardiff and the lovely homemade lasagne on solstice night!

I’m feeling a lot less knackered now that I’m carrying less and the killers hills are behind me. Feeling pretty excited about the road ahead as this is all unfamiliar territory to me now!

🎥 COVERACK TO ILFRACOMBE 🚴🏼‍♀️ Pro 🎥 COVERACK TO ILFRACOMBE 🚴🏼‍♀️

Probably the most scenic section to date.

It’s felt a bit like a 2 week long intense boot camp! The stunning scenery is keeping me going and I’m realising that much of this is being fuelled by mental energy. There’s no way I’d be able to do these back to back distances on a static bike!

Felt quite emotional getting to Lands End. This is where my obsession with bike touring started in 2008 when I did LEJOG!

All was going well until I got a puncture on the Tarka trail and then realised that I’d got a crack in my wheel rim. A helpful man who knew about bikes advised me not to carry on with a heavy load. Fortunately I was meeting my mum in Ilfracombe that night so she picked up my panniers and I cycled the rest of the way without my ‘whiskers’. I decided to replace the wheel when I got to Bristol and risk cycling on the crack (without panniers) for 2 days thanks to mum’s taxi service.

The weather was mostly perfect except for a day of rain on Saturday. I found myself swearing out loud at the sky to “stop f**king raining!” because it felt like it was never going to end. Usually I don’t mind a bit of rain but after the wheel fiasco, this was testing my limits.

Really looking forward to ‘completing’ the West Country and moving on to some flatter terrain. Next update will be from Wales!

🇬🇧 Being called “my lovely” in most West Country shops and pubs

🇬🇧 Always asking if I ‘want a receipt with that’ when I’ve just bought a flapjack and am already half way out of the shop

🇬🇧 Not quite grasping the concept of cycling ‘the British coastline’ and often seeming very surprised that my trip includes Scotland. And even more surprised when I tell them that it accounts for a third of it.

Highlights

💛 Reaching Lands End then turning a corner

💛 The dramatic Cornish tin mine landscapes

💛 All the surfer beaches on the north coast of Devon & Cornwall

💛 Finally getting to do a decent stretch of flat cycling on the Tarka Trail

💛 Pasties from Philps Bakeries (like an upmarket Cornish Greggs)

💛 Jaw dropping scenery and mostly sunny weather

Lowlights

😔 Being told by an Air BnB host that there were ‘too many rainbow flags’ in Bude and ‘they’ shouldn’t put them up next to Union Jack flags because it’s not traditional. Too tired to challenge him.

😔 A puncture on the Tarka Trail leading me to find a crack in my wheel rim. Still rode on it but got mum (who happened to be visiting) to take panniers.

😔 A day of mostly cold wind and rain on Saturday coinciding with cracked rim-gate.

Notable moments

😲 Randomly bumping into a friend in Polzeath

The next instalment!

It’s been the most physically challenging 4 consecutive days of my life! If this trip was a new job then that was the training period! I’m glad to get Devon and Cornwall out of the way first. With hills comes stunning scenery but the days have been very long and I’m often arriving at my accommodation around 9pm.

Still really enjoying it and so grateful for the perfect weather. I’ve already met so many people (fulfilling my extrovert needs!) yet have all day to myself for much needed introversion time. This trip is definitely well suited to the ambivert type like me.

I’m very much looking forward to the time when I don’t have to climb more than 1000 metres in a day! Cycling on flat terrain has become a rare luxury.

Thanks for all the lovely messages. Next update will be from Illfracombe!

4 days in 1 minute…

I’ve been taking little video snippets along the route so I don’t forget what I’ve seen. The days have a tendency to blur into one and my perception of time is very distorted! Feels like I left Brighton weeks ago!

I’m really enjoying the trip so far despite it being quite physically demanding with such a heavy load. (I did ditch a pair of shoes and a can of dry shampoo yesterday though). The hills have really kicked in now and going up them feels like I’m on a cross trainer and barely moving! But mentally I’m on a total geographical high and buzzing from all the new places I’m seeing and people I’m meeting.

Other than my daily Wordle, I’ve set myself this video project to engage my brain as I’m not really using it much throughout the day!

Thanks for all the support so far. I’ll be back with an update when I get to the Lizard Peninsula 🤞🏼

PS I just found out that @timmy.mallett is doing this trip too! He’s all the way up in Scotland right now. I’m right behind you Timmy! Literally 😊
